Perth Chapter no 46 and Worthy Matron, Sister Helen McLaughlan and Worthy Patron, Brother Vic Tate were delighted to donate $1,000 to Canteen. The donation was presented to Mrs Lorraine Kerwin, wife of the Grand Master of WA who has chosen Canteen as her charity during the Grand Master’s term of office.
Canteen provides support services and programs for young people aged 12-24 affected by cancer. It offers counselling, meetings, camps, education seminars, online forums and outings for young people living with cancer; this includes patients, siblings and offspring. This donation was warmly welcomed and will be put towards enabling these important services.
Perth Chapter would like to thank Mrs Kerwin for attending our meeting and giving us an insight into the work of Canteen.

Sunday 19th September, members were busy cooking up a BBQ at Belmont’s Bunning. Blessed with beautiful weather, we set out to fundraise for our Grand Master’s wife’s charity – Canteen. Despite the obstacles that occurred, everyone enjoyed themselves and made a difference to a wonderful cause. It was a lovely opportunity to guide new members through the experience; whilst sharing many a laugh together.
Who would have thought you could run out of bread rolls, sausages and onions only to restock THAN have no gas!!!
Everyone’s now prepared and well-rehearsed for the next cook up opportunity that comes our way. Thanks to all members for their assistance and sense of humour.

Reaching out across the globe ” Turn on Your light”.
Sister Anne Brogden of Perth Chapter No 46 and Grand Representative of the United Grand Chapter of Australia to the Amanecer Chapter N.5-Santa Cruz, Bolivia received an invitation through our Worthy Grand Secretary, from her Grand Representative, Sister Argentina Mercado, to attend the Grand Chapter of Bolivia 16th Grand Session via Zoom. The whole of the session was in Spanish except the address from Sister Marianne Shenefelt, The Most Worthy Grand Matron of the General Grand Chapter in USA. This was translated by the WG Secretary into Spanish. The ceremony commenced in the Chapter room with words by the Worthy Grand Matron Sister Maria Teresa Dalenr and Worthy Grand Patron Brother Victor Hugo Cuenca Espada.
The zoom camera showed only a few of the office bearers in attendance and all wearing masks. During the session a total of 410 members participated via ZOOM. The ceremony continued with the flags of Bolivia, USA and another country being brought in, and all the verses of the respective country’s national anthem being sung. This was followed by a short power point presentation from all 24 Chapters in Bolivia noting the Worthy Matron, Worthy Patron, Immediate Past Worthy Matron and Immediate Past Worthy Patron, Associate Matron and Associate Patron of these Chapters. There were photos taken from their installation and social activities showing how they had implemented the Worthy Grand Matron’s theme for her term “Turn on Your Light”. The charity work involved providing food, clothing and provisions for less fortunate families and working with children in hospital care. It was interesting to note that just like us in Australia there were a lot of social photographs of the sisters and brother enjoying fellowship meals together.
The final part of the proceedings was when each of the Grand Chapter Representatives spoke about the country they had been chosen to represent and this is when I was able to see Sister Argentina Mercado on the screen. It was interesting to note that the office bearers wear the same colour sash as part of their regalia, with each chapter having its own colour. All the sisters in the chapter wear the same design white suit, long straight shirt and tailored jacket. Nothing different for the men, just the familiar dinner suit but I did note that the bow tie was coloured.
It was lovely to be able to be part of the Order of The Eastern Star on the other side of the world.
Sister Anne Brogden – Grand Representative to the Grand Chapter of Bolivia in Australia.
